The City of Cape Town has accepted a settlement offer from the Observatory Civil Association (OCA) to cease all legal action regarding the River Club development.

    1. The R4-billion project in Observatory, featuring Amazon as the anchor tenant, will proceed based on its planning approval conditions.
    2. The OCA will contribute to the City’s legal costs, signaling the City’s commitment to defending its planning decisions and Cape Town’s reputation as a global investment destination.
    3. The settlement follows the Supreme Court of Appeal’s rejection of the OCA’s application to appeal a High Court ruling against an interdict on the River Club development.
    4. The River Club development will bring economic, environmental, and heritage benefits, including the rehabilitation of Liesbeek River, green open spaces, and heritage infrastructure in collaboration with First Nations groups.
    5. The project is expected to generate over 5,200 construction jobs, provide approximately 19,000 employment opportunities, inject R4.5 billion into the local economy, and deliver new residential accommodations, including affordable housing.
