WeThinkCode has appointed Ashmita Singh as its new chief executive officer, marking a planned leadership transition at the Johannesburg-based software development academy.

As reported by ITWeb, the change took effect on 1 January 2026, with former CEO Nyari Samushonga, who held the position since 2019, assuming the role of executive chairperson of the board.

During Samushonga’s tenure, WeThinkCode expanded significantly, growing to train approximately 600 learners annually across seven campuses, five of which operate in partnership with technical and vocational education and training colleges. The organisation also strengthened its funding from corporate, philanthropic, and public sector sources while developing an in-house curriculum featuring specialised technology streams.

Samushonga will remain involved in strategic direction and key partnerships, supporting the academy’s continued growth in South Africa’s digital skills landscape.

Singh brings extensive experience in corporate finance, entrepreneurship, and social development, with previous roles at Mazars, South African Breweries, and AB InBev, alongside founding technology-driven ventures aimed at economic inclusion in underserved communities. More recently, she served as managing director at AMANDLA and Rhiza Ventures, where she scaled youth skills and enterprise development programmes nationwide.

The appointment aligns with rising demand for digital skills in Africa, where the tech sector faces a shortage of qualified talent amid rapid AI and emerging technology adoption. WeThinkCode’s model, which offers tuition-free, peer-to-peer learning focused on coding and problem-solving, has positioned it as a key player in addressing youth unemployment, with graduates entering roles at local and international firms.

This transition seeks to combine institutional stability with fresh operational expertise, as the board intends to scale impact further while building on established foundations in training capacity and ecosystem partnerships.
