The South African Broadcasting Corporation has appointed Jason Olifant as group executive for legal, governance, and regulatory affairs. This senior leadership placement comes as the broadcaster manages a transition toward improved corporate stability and oversight. Olifant is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa with fifteen years of experience across the telecommunications, technology, and media sectors. According to a statement by the SABC, his recruitment is intended to support the organisation in navigating a complex regulatory environment while protecting its long-term integrity.

Olifant started his career at Schindlers Attorneys, where he focused on labour law, litigation, and tax matters. He later moved into in-house counsel roles at several large organisations, including the NTT Group and MultiChoice. As reported by Business Day, the public broadcaster has faced consistent pressure to reform its governance structures following a period of financial and administrative difficulty. His background in litigation management and commercial law is expected to provide a framework for reducing the legal risks that have historically affected the entity.

His professional history includes an international term in Hong Kong with Naspers and Prosus, where he managed legal affairs across multiple jurisdictions. This experience is relevant as the media industry continues to shift toward digital platforms. According to TechCentral, the South African media sector is currently adjusting to new legislative requirements regarding digital rights and data privacy. Olifant previously served as the executive head of legal affairs for technology and commercial operations at Vodacom, a role involving the management of enterprise-wide risk.

His academic qualifications include an executive MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science and two master of laws degrees in commercial and labour law. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in law. This combination of business administration and advanced legal study is designed to bridge the gap between technical legal compliance and corporate strategy. His previous recognition as a top professional in his field by national publications reflects his standing within the South African legal community.

The broadcaster has stated that this executive role is a priority for its current sustainability strategy. The leadership team aims to use his expertise in mergers and acquisitions to better manage the corporation’s commercial interests and high-value contracts. As reported by the Mail & Guardian, the SABC has been involved in several protracted legal disputes over the past decade, making the strengthening of its internal legal department a practical necessity. The appointment signals a move toward a more disciplined approach to contract management and regulatory adherence.

Group chief executive Nomsa Chabeli noted that the position is a critical leadership appointment for the organisation. She indicated that his experience in regulated and technology-driven environments would assist the broadcaster in meeting its governance obligations. By recruiting an executive with experience in the insurance and telecommunications industries, the broadcaster intends to apply private-sector standards to its internal operations. This approach is aimed at improving the efficiency of the legal and regulatory division.

The inclusion of Olifant in the executive team is part of a broader effort to rebuild institutional trust with the public and commercial stakeholders. The broadcaster is in a phase where its financial viability depends on strict adherence to regulatory mandates and successful litigation management. With his track record in risk analysis and strategic leadership, the new executive is expected to oversee the legal department during a period of significant industry change.
