    African Bank Appoints Deputy Chief Executive: Business and Commercial

    Happy Ralinala, Deputy Chief Executive: Business and Commercial

    African Bank has announced the appointment of Happy Ralinala as Deputy Chief Executive: Business and Commercial, strengthening its leadership team as it accelerates the next phase of growth in its Business and Commercial banking portfolio.

    The appointment comes as African Bank sharpens its focus on expanding customer value, driving sustainable growth, and building an inclusive banking ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs, businesses, and communities that remain underserved.

    Happy Ralinala brings extensive experience in strategic business management, business banking, wealth and private banking, and enterprise development. She previously held executive roles at Barclays Africa Group, where she served as Managing Executive of Business Banking South Africa and later Managing Executive of Private and Wealth Banking.

    During her tenure at Barclays Africa Group, she led the business to be recognised as the Best SME Bank in South Africa by Capital Finance International (CFI), reflecting her ability to design and execute strategies that deliver tangible value for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Her career also includes senior leadership positions at FNB, Afrox, Thebe Risk & Benefits, Discovery, and Sizwe Medical Services.

    Happy holds an MBA and an MPhil in International Business and is an alumna of the Oxford Bank Governance Programme. She has served on a number of private and public sector boards, including African Bank, Grindrod Bank, FNZ Silica, the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA), and the National Development Agency. Her board experience has provided her with strong insight into risk management, transformation, sustainability, and financial inclusion.

    Beyond her corporate career, Happy is a committed mentor and advocate for women, youth, and entrepreneurship. She is passionate about developing future leaders and contributing to a more inclusive South African economy.

    In her new role, Happy will support the strategic and operational leadership of the Business and Commercial division, working closely with teams to strengthen customer value propositions and drive commercial performance. Her appointment forms part of African Bank’s broader strategy to build a scalable, competitive, and relevant Business and Commercial bank.

    African Bank welcomed Happy Ralinala to its Business and Commercial leadership team, noting that her experience, energy, and people-centred leadership will play a key role in advancing the bank’s mission of building a bank for the people, by the people, serving the people.
