Mercedes-Benz has expanded a US safety recall to cover 30,078 S-Class saloons from the 2022 to 2025 model years because the front brake hoses can leak. The company filed the recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on 2 October. It covers the S 500 4MATIC, S 580 4MATIC and S 580 e 4MATIC, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 and S 680, and the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance.
According to the filing, heat and mechanical stress can fatigue the hose material over time and cause leaks. If a hose fails, brake fluid drains from one of the car’s two hydraulic circuits, which weakens braking. The driver sees a red brake-fluid warning in the digital instrument cluster. A leak or rupture would lengthen the distance needed to stop.
This is the second campaign for the fault. The first recall, 25V116, covered 20,339 S-Class cars from the 2021 to 2023 model years. At the time, Mercedes attributed the failures to climate exposure and a specific production window. The carmaker opened a field engineering investigation in March 2026, received the returned hoses by June and reviewed the supplier’s laboratory and durability results in July. Reports from owners outside the original regions and build dates led it to widen the recall.
| Model | Model years | Units recalled | US starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| S 580 4MATIC | 2022–2025 | 16,881 | $128,600 (R2.13m) |
| S 500 4MATIC | 2022–2025 | 7,143 | $117,750 (R1.95m) |
| S 580 e 4MATIC | 2023–2025 | 2,277 | $128,200 (R2.13m) |
| AMG S 63 E Performance | 2023–2025 | 1,760 | $186,200 (R3.09m) |
| Maybach S 680 4MATIC | 2022–2025 | 1,070 | $240,500 (R3.99m) |
| Maybach S 580 4MATIC | 2022–2025 | 947 | $203,500 (R3.38m) |
| Total | 30,078 |
The expanded recall now covers every vehicle built before a modified front brake hose went into series production. Mercedes has logged three US cases among these cars, in April, May and August 2026, and no crashes have been reported. The carmaker also said it knows of no injuries. Dealers were told on 9 October, and letters to owners are due on 27 November. Dealers will replace both front-axle brake hoses free of charge.
The recall affects Mercedes’ most expensive models at a time when sales in that segment are falling. Top-end sales fell 21% in the third quarter to 53,900 units, down from 67,800 a year earlier. That was 13.2% of Mercedes-Benz Cars sales. Group sales of cars and vans fell 6% to 491,700, with the company pointing mainly to weak conditions in China.
The brake recall is one of several Mercedes has issued in the US recently. In July it recalled 310,667 vehicles because water could get into a door-lock microswitch and create a rollaway risk. It also had to recall 409 cars a second time after some dealers fitted the wrong fuse box while repairing a 2024 fuse fault that affected about 32,000 vehicles.
The new filing applies only to US vehicles, although Mercedes said information from markets outside the US contributed to the expansion. Owners can check their vehicle identification number at NHTSA.gov/recalls or call Mercedes-Benz customer service on 800-367-6372.
