New Mechatronics Qualification Debuts at Mercedes-Benz Academy

    February 11, 2026By Staff Writer
Mercedes-Benz Learning Academy Achieves SA's First Mechatronics Trade Test Centre Accreditation

The Mercedes-Benz Learning Academy (MBLA) has become the first institution to be accredited as a Trade Test facility for Mechatronics in South Africa. Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary trade that integrates mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, and control systems, equipping artisans with the skills required to work on advanced automated and digitally controlled technologies. An accredited trade test centre can formally test, assess, and certify artisans to ensure they meet nationally recognised trade standards.

The qualification, newly introduced by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) was developed by the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB), a regulatory entity within the department responsible for moderating artisan trades. Following a rigorous process of pilot projects which were conducted in August 2024 and September 2025, the qualification was accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), which is the quality council for all occupational qualifications and is responsible for, amongst other things, accrediting training providers and trade centres as well as setting quality standards and monitoring.

MBLA was chosen by NAMB as the national pilot centre, a recognition of its state-of-the-art equipment and world-class facilities that fully meet the stringent standards required. MBLA also partners with other government bodies, including MerSETA, to deliver certified training and trade testing for artisans

Commenting on the achievement of being the first centre in the country to receive this recognition, the Head of Human Relations at Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA), Thapelo Lakaje said: “Being selected as the country’s first Mechatronics Trade Centre underscores our dedication to world-class training is rooted in doing things the right way — taking the time to prepare artisans for the real expectations of the industry. We are proud of the commitment shown by every learner and instructor at MBLA, who bring consistency, care and pride into their work each day. Through their effort, a new chapter is being shaped and a lasting legacy is being built for the MBLA.”

Established in 1981 as one of South Africa’s first fully integrated multi-racial technical training centres, MBLA was transformed in 2016 through a Public-Private Partnership into a state-of-the-art Learning Academy, expanding facilities, trades, and technology for learners and the automotive industry. The Academy is among the few centres in the Eastern Cape accredited to conduct trade tests for Electrician, Millwright, Fitter, Fitter & Turner, Automotive Motor Mechanic, and Transportation Electrician qualifications. For over four decades, the Academy has delivered quality training and developed a skilled artisan pipeline that supports MBSA’s business model while addressing youth unemployment and underdevelopment.
