Investment from Vumela Fund to Drive Growth, Jobs and Export Expansion

The fresh produce export market remains highly fragmented, with many African growers lacking direct access to premium international markets. Challenges such as inconsistent quality, fragmented supply chains, post-harvest losses and reliance on intermediaries reduce returns for producers and limit opportunities for growth.

Despite these challenges, global demand for premium fresh produce continues to grow. This is particularly evident in high-value categories such as berries, exotic fruits and speciality vegetables. In fact, fresh fruit and vegetables account for the largest share of South Africa’s US$15.1 billion agricultural export industry.

Cape Town-based fresh produce exporter Iris Fresh, which sources premium fruits and vegetables from growers across South Africa and neighbouring countries for international markets, has secured growth funding from the Vumela Fund. The funding will support operational expenditure and working capital as the business enters its next phase of expansion.

From business development to growth capital

Iris Fresh joined the FNB SME Growth Exporter Programme in July last year to strengthen its export capabilities and expand its reach into international markets. Through the program, the business has benefited from strategic advisory, operational diagnostics, mentorship, financial guidance and market access support delivered by Edge Growth.

The business has now progressed to the next stage of its growth journey, securing developmental funding through the Vumela Fund. Established in 2009 by FNB Business Banking in partnership with Edge Growth, Vumela combines developmental funding with active business enablement to support high-potential SMEs as they grow.

This progression demonstrates the value of an integrated SME ecosystem in which support evolves alongside the needs and maturity of the business.

“SMEs do not grow through funding alone. They need the right combination of capability, market access and capital at the right stages of their journey. Iris Fresh is a powerful example of what FNB is seeking to enable through our SME ecosystem, supporting businesses to strengthen their foundations, access new markets and, when they are ready, unlock the capital required to scale. When businesses like Iris Fresh grow, the impact extends beyond the entrepreneur to jobs, supply chains and the wider economy,” says Palesa Moeletsi of FNB.

Scaling the business and its impact

For Iris Fresh, the next chapter is about scale. The investment will strengthen the company’s capacity to connect growers across South Africa and neighbouring countries with premium international markets through coordinated sourcing, volume aggregation and rigorous quality standards.

The potential impact extends well beyond the business itself. Iris Fresh already supports more than 150 indirect jobs and sources approximately 80% of its produce from small- and medium-scale farmers. As the business expands its operations and market reach, this impact is expected to grow.

“This funding marks an important milestone in our journey at Iris Fresh. It allows us to invest in growing the business, unlocking new opportunities, and reinforcing our commitment to building a future-focused agricultural business,” says founder Sandeep Valodia.

Valodia adds that the program’s network, expertise and growth opportunities are already delivering value to the business, with the impact expected to grow as Iris Fresh scales.

Backing businesses with the potential to scale

Iris Fresh’s strong management team, efficient operations and potential for scalable growth were key factors in attracting investment from the Vumela Fund.

“Iris Fresh is led by a highly capable and experienced management team with a strong track record of operational execution and growth. Vumela’s investment will provide critical capital to scale the business, enabling expansion of operations, strengthening market presence, and enhancing supply capabilities,” says Jessica Blake, Associate Principal at Edge Growth. “The partnership supports a well-run, high-potential business poised for sustainable growth, contributing to job creation and broader economic development.”

Iris Fresh’s journey demonstrates what becomes possible when an ambitious SME meets the right support at the right stage of its growth. From strengthening its export capabilities to accessing growth capital and international markets, the business is now positioned not only to scale, but to create opportunities throughout its value chain connecting more African growers to global markets, supporting jobs and demonstrating the potential of South African SMEs to compete beyond our borders.
