SPAR South Africa is set for a major leadership shake-up as long-serving CEO Max Oliva steps down after three decades with the company. Oliva, who guided the retailer through pivotal moments including the COVID-19 pandemic and major digital transformations, will now take the helm at McDonald’s South Africa. His departure comes at a time of strong performance for SPAR, with the company well-positioned in the competitive retail sector.

During his tenure, Oliva rose through the ranks to lead SPAR’s largest division, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and innovation. He successfully implemented transformative technologies like SAP while maintaining the company’s market position. SPAR Group CEO Angelo Swartz will now assume operational leadership of the Southern Africa region, ensuring continuity of the strategies and successes established under Oliva’s leadership.

In his farewell remarks, Oliva expressed confidence in SPAR’s future leadership while acknowledging the difficulty of his decision to depart. The transition marks both the end of a significant chapter for SPAR and an exciting new challenge for Oliva, who will bring his extensive retail experience to McDonald’s South Africa. The company has emphasized its commitment to maintaining its growth trajectory during this leadership transition period.
