Phakamani Impact Capital is set to celebrate a historic achievement this September, having facilitated R1 billion in funding for South African small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) since its launch. This milestone goes beyond mere financial figures; it highlights Phakamani’s commitment to nurturing resilient entrepreneurs and driving economic change through enterprise and supplier development (ESD).

The celebration will occur on 19 September 2024 at The Garden Venue in Northriding, bringing together industry leaders and selected SMMEs eager to share their success stories. These entrepreneurs, supported by Phakamani’s funding and development initiatives, exemplify the transformative power of ESD in job creation and local economic participation.

Phakamani has sought to challenge the perception that ESD is merely a compliance exercise, often failing to generate lasting opportunities for black-owned and community-based businesses. Co-founder and CEO Nick van Rensburg emphasises that their approach is distinctive, combining patient capital, mentorship, and market access. This strategy has proven effective, with SMMEs not just surviving but thriving, creating jobs, and establishing generational wealth.

The impact of Phakamani’s work is particularly evident in mining-linked communities, where unemployment is high and opportunities are scarce. By providing both funding and practical support, Phakamani has empowered businesses that now employ dozens, and in some instances, hundreds of local residents. Van Rensburg notes that every rand unlocked has had a multiplier effect, resulting in thousands of jobs sustained and local economies revitalised.

At the upcoming celebration, attendees will engage with a diverse range of successful SMMEs showcasing their products and services. Their stories span various sectors, including construction, engineering, and technology, all underscoring Phakamani’s catalytic role in helping them scale and create meaningful community impact.

The event will be hosted by renowned broadcaster and journalist Gugulethu Mhlungu, who will guide the programme of reflection, celebration, and fine dining.

Looking ahead, Van Rensburg sees the R1 billion milestone as just the beginning. He acknowledges that South Africa’s unemployment crisis is pressing and insists that SMMEs are vital to reversing this trend. With aspirations for their next billion to extend further into more communities and sectors, Phakamani is committed to building a lasting legacy.
