Global aviation IT and technology solutions provider SITA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ethiopian Airlines to collaboratively develop innovative solutions aimed at enhancing the airline’s operations and passenger experiences. This partnership will also involve industry partners, technology providers, business accelerators, and startups.

Selim Bouri, SITA’s president for the Middle East and Africa, noted the unprecedented growth in air travel across Africa, alongside evolving passenger expectations driven by rapid digital advancements. He emphasised the need for hubs like Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport to create a seamless passenger journey, enabling airlines to optimise flight schedules and provide memorable travel experiences. This collaboration is focused on fostering the innovation required to meet these emerging demands and shape the future of aviation.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, highlighted Ethiopia’s ambition to become a vibrant destination for investment, trade, and tourism. He remarked that Ethiopian Airlines plays a pivotal role in realising this vision, stressing the importance of creating excellent first and last impressions for both business and leisure travellers. The partnership aims to position the airline to deliver exceptional experiences while fully capitalising on upcoming opportunities.

This collaboration arises as African airlines face increasing pressure to provide more efficient journeys while managing a growing volume of operations. National flag carriers like Ethiopian Airlines are particularly challenged to leave lasting impressions on their passengers. The SITA-Ethiopian Airlines partnership will commence by identifying key challenges for the carrier and developing forward-thinking solutions to address them.

SITA serves approximately 2,500 clients, including over 70 governments, and supports more than 1,000 airports and 19,600 aircraft worldwide. The organisation facilitates 45% to 50% of the global air transport industry’s data exchange. Ethiopian Airlines stands as Africa’s leading aviation group, operating a fleet of over 150 aircraft with an average age of less than seven years and more than 100 additional aircraft on order. The airline serves 142 international passenger and cargo destinations, including 70 within Africa.
