Mediclinic not guilty of billing fraud allegations

    March 14, 2024By Staff Writer
Greg van Wyk, Chief Executive Officer at Mediclinic Southern Africa

Mediclinic Southern Africa has been cleared of billing fraud following an independent investigation conducted by law firm ENSafrica.

    1. The investigation was launched in response to anonymous claims of billing irregularities at six hospitals in Gauteng and Western Cape, alleging manipulation of ICD-10 codes to inflate claims.
    2. The investigation, which included interviews with Mediclinic staff and a review of extensive documentation, found no evidence of intentional billing or coding manipulation at a hospital or group level.
    3. Mediclinic provided ENSafrica with unrestricted access to investigate the allegations, and the forensic expert from ENSafrica stated that multiple checks and balances exist to prevent such practices.
    4. The investigation found no incentives or direct financial benefits for Mediclinic and its staff to engage in fraudulent billing practices.
    5. Mediclinic expressed encouragement at the investigation’s conclusions, highlighting the absence of a culture of victimization within the organization.
    6. The private hospital group remains committed to upholding ethical billing practices and providing quality healthcare services to its patients.
