Shoprite’s merchandise sales for the 52 weeks ending July 2023 reached a staggering R215 billion, marking a 16.9% surge from the previous year.

    1. The company’s success can be attributed to its multi-year transformation strategy, focusing on smarter Shoprite and core supermarkets segmentation strategies.
    2. Shoprite’s core operations, including Shoprite, Usave, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, and LiqourShop, contributed to merchandise sales of R173.6 billion, a 17.8% increase from the prior year.
    3. During the past year, Shoprite opened a record-breaking 340 net new stores, bringing its total store count to 3,326.
    4. Checkers, Shoprite’s upper market supermarket chain, reported stellar growth with an 18% increase in merchandise sales, driven by its focus on fresh foods and premium brands.
    5. The on-demand grocery delivery service, Checkers Sixty60, played a significant role in boosting sales, expanding its presence to 466 stores and achieving a remarkable 81.5% increase in sales.
    6. Despite the impressive sales performance, Shoprite’s gross margins slightly declined to 24.1% due to investments in maintaining lower selling prices and the cost of diesel for backup energy solutions during load shedding.
