Meta Wants Businesses Open 24/7 With AI

Meta has unveiled a new artificial intelligence tool designed to transform how businesses of all sizes engage with their customers, announcing the Meta Business Agent at its annual Conversations conference in London..

The tool promises to give businesses what Meta describes as an “infinite team” — an AI-powered presence that responds to customers at any hour, in any language, across the company’s messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

    Instant setup, round-the-clock service

According to Meta, more than one million businesses are already using a version of the Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger. The company says the broader rollout will allow any business to be up and running within minutes, with the agent capable of answering customer queries, recommending products, booking appointments, qualifying sales leads and even closing transactions — all while mirroring the business’s own tone and language.

The expansion to Instagram marks a significant broadening of the tool’s reach, given the platform’s role as a discovery and commerce channel for businesses globally. Meta says that with over a billion people already connecting with businesses across its platforms daily, the Business Agent can begin delivering personalised experiences from the very first customer interaction.

A tool that works both ways

Beyond customer-facing functions, Meta is positioning the Business Agent as an internal productivity tool as well. A morning briefing feature will allow business owners to catch up on overnight conversations and receive summaries of key customer threads — effectively acting as a daily intelligence report drawn from live customer interactions.

Future capabilities are expected to include market research, product insights, calendar management and competitive intelligence, with Meta opening a waitlist for businesses keen to access these extended features ahead of the wider rollout.

    Enterprise infrastructure and third-party integrations

For larger businesses, Meta is simultaneously launching the Meta Business Agent Platform — an enterprise-grade infrastructure layer that allows companies to build, customise and deploy their agents at scale. The platform integrates with hundreds of existing business systems, including Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee, enabling agents to take direct action on behalf of the business rather than simply responding to queries.

The platform includes built-in guardrails, compliance controls and measurement tools, giving enterprise clients the ability to define rules and maintain oversight over how their agents behave across customer interactions.

    Pricing and availability

Getting started with the Meta Business Agent is currently free. Meta has indicated that in the coming months, access will transition to paid subscription tiers, with options designed to accommodate businesses at every scale — from sole traders to multinational enterprises.

For South African businesses, the launch represents a significant opportunity, given WhatsApp’s dominant role as a communication channel in the country. The ability to automate customer service in local languages and across time zones could prove particularly valuable for small and medium enterprises that lack the resources to staff dedicated customer support teams.

Meta says businesses can activate their Business Agent directly through its platform, with the company expressing confidence that the tool will redefine what it means to show up for customers in an always-on digital economy.
