Rand Water Services, a key subsidiary of the national water utility Rand Water, is on the hunt for a new Chief Executive Officer. The role, a fixed-term contract of five years based in Johannesburg’s Rietvlei, offers an exciting opportunity to shape South Africa’s water and sanitation future.

The CEO will report directly to both Rand Water and the Board of Rand Water Services, providing strategic leadership, risk management, and operational accountability. Their mission is to ensure the company delivers reliable, innovative, and sustainable water services that meet the needs of South Africa, while also ensuring financial sustainability.

Candidates are expected to hold at least an NQF Level 8 qualification in fields such as Commerce, Engineering, or Natural Sciences, with a preference for a Master’s degree like an MBA or MSc at NQF Level 9. Membership with recognised professional bodies such as ECSA, SACNASP, or SAICE is also highly desirable.

With 15+ years of senior management experience in related sectors, applicants should demonstrate a proven track record of leadership at executive and board levels, particularly within water or public utilities. Experience in business development and establishing new enterprises or partnerships will be a significant advantage.

The ideal candidate will oversee the development of long-term strategies, align organisational performance with strategic targets, and foster growth through infrastructure projects, water reuse, and public-private partnerships. They will also lead digital transformation initiatives and stakeholder engagement efforts to boost efficiency and stakeholder confidence.

The role demands a strategic thinker with strong financial and contractual management skills, a high level of emotional intelligence, and the ability to manage organisational change effectively. The CEO will support government initiatives and drive innovation to ensure sustainable water and sanitation services across the country.

This position offers a rare opportunity to impact South Africa’s water security at a high level. The successful candidate will need to balance strategic vision with attention to detail, foster strong relationships, and embody high ethical standards. If you have the expertise and passion for transforming water services, this could be the role for you.
