BMW has revealed the first prototype of its upcoming electric vehicle lineup, signaling a new phase in its competition with Tesla and its efforts to maintain sales in China, its most crucial market.

    1. The Vision Neue Klasse concept car, showcased at the IAA show in Munich, offers a glimpse into BMW’s dedicated EV platform, set to debut in 2025, coinciding with the introduction of Mercedes-Benz’s new electric models.
    2. BMW’s progress in electric vehicle development has been hindered by software issues, similar to Volkswagen’s challenges, which have led to delays in the launch of key Porsche and Audi electric vehicles.
    3. In a departure from its traditional emphasis on performance, BMW is highlighting digital features such as a full-width windshield display and advanced voice command and gesture recognition in response to the preferences of Chinese consumers who favor local EV brands.
    4. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have historically dominated the premium combustion-engine car market in China. However, they are now facing stiff competition from local brands like BYD and Nio, prompting the need for accelerated electric offerings.
    5. BMW’s CEO Oliver Zipse stated that the Neue Klasse models will be even more profitable than the company’s current lineup of electric cars. The vehicles are expected to have a range of up to 800 kilometers and offer fast charging capabilities.
    6. While BMW is embracing digital features, the company remains committed to its brand traditions. The Neue Klasse models are designed to provide an enjoyable driving experience at high speeds, differentiating them from many competitors.
