Glencore Alloys, a major producer of ferrochrome and primary vanadium, is focusing on decarbonization and renewable energy projects.

    1. The company has received approvals to build a 25 MW solar plant at its Rhovan vanadium operation in South Africa’s North West province.
    2. Glencore Alloys is working with two independent power producers (IPPs) on virtual power purchase agreements, with one IPP nearing 95% completion for a 200 MW solar project and the other at 40% completion for a 150 MW solar project.
    3. The company is exploring on-site projects involving cogeneration, which would utilize operational offgas to generate electricity.
    4. Glencore has set a short-term target of a 15% reduction in total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2026. It is focusing on switching to renewable energy for Scope 2 emissions, waste heat utilization, electrification of mining fleets, and solar projects worldwide.
    5. Glencore Coal CEO Murray Houston stated that the company is engaged in the Just Energy Transition and is aligned with the transition’s early stages in South Africa, considering the winddown of coal operations.
    6. Glencore is optimistic about its petroleum supplier company, Astron Energy, and believes in promoting local beneficiation. The refinery is operating at full capacity, processing over 90,000 barrels per day and producing various final products such as LPG, petrol, jet fuel, diesel, and fuel oil.
    7. The refinery uses processes like distillation, hydrotreating, cracking, reforming, and catalytic conversion to produce high-value products.
    8. Glencore is dedicated to the refinery business, and its products are distributed through its forecourt network and fuel brand.
