Transnet has selected International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) as the preferred bidder for a joint venture to develop and upgrade the Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 over a 25-year term.

    1. ICTSI, a Manila-headquartered company, is one of the largest container terminal operators in the world and manages 34 terminals in 20 countries.
    2. The upgrade will help Transnet grow Pier 2’s current capacity of 2 million TEUs to 2.8 million TEUs, which is aligned with plans to increase the Port of Durban’s container capacity from 3.3 million TEUs to an eventual envisaged capacity of 11.4 million TEUs.
    3. The partnership with ICTSI is expected to improve efficiencies at the terminal and support the terminal in providing operational and commercial support to access global shipping line call routes.
    4. The finalisation of the process follows approvals from the government in terms of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
