    Jetour Launches 1,200km Hybrid SUV

    Jetour has expanded its South African line-up with the launch of the T1 i-DM plug-in hybrid SUV, reinforcing the growing push by Chinese vehicle manufacturers into the country’s fast-growing new-energy vehicle market. The launch comes shortly after the Chery-owned brand confirmed plans to assemble vehicles locally at the former Nissan plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria, signalling a longer-term commitment to the domestic automotive sector.

    The arrival of the T1 i-DM reflects changing consumer behaviour in South Africa’s SUV market, where buyers are increasingly seeking alternatives that reduce fuel consumption without relying entirely on public charging infrastructure. While fully electric vehicle adoption remains constrained by charging limitations and electricity supply concerns, plug-in hybrids are gaining traction as a transitional technology combining conventional petrol engines with electric driving capability.

    According to data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa), sales of new-energy vehicles — including hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles — have risen steadily over the past three years. Hybrid models currently dominate the segment as motorists remain cautious about range anxiety and charging infrastructure availability.

    The new T1 i-DM combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an 18.4kWh battery pack and electric motor linked to a dedicated hybrid transmission. Combined system output reaches 250kW and 530Nm, placing the model among the more powerful entrants in the increasingly competitive midsize SUV category.

    Jetour claims a combined driving range of up to 1,200km, while pure electric driving capability is rated at approximately 100km under optimal conditions. The company also states fuel consumption can fall as low as 1.1 litres per 100km in hybrid operation, though real-world efficiency typically varies depending on charging frequency and driving conditions.

    The timing of the launch coincides with intensifying competition among Chinese automotive brands in South Africa. Manufacturers including Chery, Haval, Omoda, Jaecoo and BYD have rapidly expanded market share by targeting price-sensitive consumers with technology-rich vehicles positioned below equivalent European and Japanese rivals.

    South Africa’s SUV market has become one of the country’s fastest-growing vehicle segments, with demand increasingly concentrated in crossover and adventure-oriented models. Consumers have also shown stronger appetite for vehicles combining lifestyle positioning with lower operating costs amid persistently high fuel prices and elevated interest rates.

    The T1 i-DM enters a market where hybrid offerings remain relatively limited compared with traditional petrol and diesel SUVs. Toyota continues to dominate local hybrid sales through models such as the Corolla Cross Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, while Chinese brands are now accelerating efforts to close the gap by introducing more affordable electrified alternatives.

    Jetour has positioned the T1 i-DM as an adventure-focused vehicle, equipping it with four-wheel drive capability, 190mm ground clearance and multiple terrain modes including snow, crawl and hill descent functions. The model also includes extensive technology and safety features increasingly expected in the premium midsize SUV category.

    Interior specifications include a digital instrument cluster, panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone integration, voice control and a Sony sound system. Advanced driver assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, emergency braking and a 540-degree panoramic camera system.

    The vehicle is priced at R689,900, positioning it competitively against established hybrid SUVs while undercutting several premium European alternatives. Industry analysts note that aggressive pricing has become one of the primary tools Chinese manufacturers are using to expand market penetration in South Africa.

    Jetour’s broader strategy appears increasingly tied to localisation and scale. The company’s plans to utilise the former Nissan facility in Rosslyn align with wider trends among Chinese automakers seeking regional production hubs to reduce import costs and improve supply-chain efficiency across Africa.

    South Africa remains the continent’s largest automotive manufacturing base, producing more than 600,000 vehicles annually before recent industry slowdowns. Government incentives under the Automotive Production and Development Programme continue encouraging investment into local assembly operations, particularly as manufacturers prepare for the long-term global transition towards electrified mobility.

    The introduction of the T1 i-DM therefore represents more than a single product launch. It signals how rapidly Chinese brands are reshaping South Africa’s automotive landscape through a combination of localisation, aggressive pricing and growing investment in hybrid and electric vehicle technologies.
