BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEV), is celebrating a monumental 2025 in South Africa, marking its most successful year since entering the local market in 2023. This landmark year is defined by steady commercial growth, a rapidly expanding footprint, and the introduction of pioneering electric vehicle (EV) models tailored for the South African consumer.

The successful local debuts of the BYD Dolphin Surf and Sealion 5 were highlights. South Africa’s most affordable electric vehicle, the BYD Dolphin Surf offers eco-friendly urban commuting at an unbeatable price, and the Sealion 5, a plug-in hybrid SUV that blends cutting-edge technology with premium comfort, marked a new era for sustainable family mobility.

South Africa was the first market globally to launch the Sealion 5, showcasing BYD’s confidence in the local market. These vehicles have not only captured consumer interest but also highlighted BYD’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge, sustainable options tailored to South African needs.

“This year has been a pivotal year for BYD in South Africa, marked by innovative launches like the Dolphin Surf and Sealion 5 that have resonated deeply with local consumers seeking affordable, sustainable mobility,” said Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director at BYD Auto South Africa. “Our growth reflects the trust South Africans have placed in us, and we’re excited to build on this momentum by making NEVs an everyday reality for more families and businesses.”

In addition, BYD’s dealer network has expanded to 18 locations nationwide in 2025, with plans to reach 30 by the end of the first quarter of 2026. The company is also deploying between 200 and 300 charging stations across the country, enhancing the NEV ecosystem and making electric driving viable for more drivers, from urban commuters to long-distance travellers. This infrastructure push reinforces BYD’s leadership in pioneering new energy solutions, addressing range anxiety and promoting a greener automotive sector in South Africa.

“Since 2023, we have seen steady and significant growth from both a brand and commercial perspective,” adds Steve Chang, Managing Director at BYD Auto South Africa. “Our commitment to South Africa is long-term, and as we look toward Q1 2026, we are preparing for more exciting launches and a further expanded dealer network to ensure that every South African has access to the world’s best new energy technology.”

With momentum firmly on its side, BYD shows no signs of slowing down with more exciting vehicle launches planned for the first quarter of 2026, alongside the continued rollout of dealerships and charging infrastructure.

As South Africa’s electric vehicle market continues to evolve, BYD’s landmark year in 2025 positions the brand at the forefront of the country’s transition towards cleaner, smarter and more sustainable mobility.
