Lowveld Mall in Hazyview, owned and developed by Twin City, has won the Spectrum Award for Shopping Centre Development at the South African Council of Shopping Centres’ Retail Design and Development Awards, as well as winning the Renovation/Expansion category.

Designed by MDS Architects, the R80 million redevelopment has transformed the 31-year-old mall into a contemporary retail destination inspired by a “bushveld boutique lodge”, while building on its long-standing role in the Hazyview community.

The Spectrum Award for retail design and development is the crème-de-la-crème of annual shopping centre accolades and celebrates industry achievements in innovation, creativity, vision and excellence. The award winner is drawn from the overall winner of the Retail Design & Development Awards (RDDA). The winner was announced at this week’s SACSC Congress held at the Durban ICC.

The SACSC judges unanimously selected Lowveld Mall for the overall Spectrum Award, recognising how strong design, delivered within tight budget parameters, created an improved customer experience and supported healthy returns.

Now in its eighth iteration, Lowveld Mall has grown from around 9,000sqm to more than 65,000sqm over three decades. The latest upgrade, which was completed in early February 2026, introduced a new external food court and entertainment area, landscaped public spaces, an amphitheatre, children’s play facilities, a learning centre and distinctive design features reflecting the culture and natural character of the Lowveld.

Commenting on the award, Ryno de Leeuw, Twin City CEO, says,“I’m incredibly grateful to the team, whose proactive asset management has ultimately been rewarded here. Both Groblersdal Mall and Lowveld Mall being recognised in the redevelopment category is a testament to the strategic decision that we took five years ago to continually challenge ourselves to create long-term value.”

Twin City is a privately held property development, investment and asset management company established in 1984. It develops and retains properties for the long term, building lasting relationships and sustainable creating value.
