Eskom has officially appointed Monde Bala as the CEO of the National Transmission Company SA (NTCSA), effective October 1, 2025. Bala has been serving in this role on an interim basis since July.

With a robust background in the power sector, Bala has extensive experience, having previously served as the group executive for Eskom Distribution since 2019. His impressive career at the utility spans 27 years, during which he has held various leadership positions. He holds a BSc in electrical engineering from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Engineering from Wits University.

The NTCSA was established as part of Eskom’s unbundling process, aimed at enhancing the utility’s operational efficiency and service delivery.

In addition to Bala’s appointment, Eskom announced that the minister of electricity and energy has extended the board’s term from the end of September to the end of November 2025. This extension is intended to support the board’s ongoing efforts to improve performance and guide Eskom toward stability and growth.

The board was originally appointed in October 2022 for a three-year term.

Furthermore, Eskom revealed that Calib Cassim, who has spent 23 years with the utility, will retire from his role as CFO in October 2026. Cassim has served as Eskom’s CFO since November 2018 and was acting group CEO from February 2023 until the appointment of current CEO Dan Marokane in January 2024. The transition period will allow Eskom to appoint a successor and ensure a smooth handover. Cassim will step down as an executive director once a replacement is found.
