South Africa’s Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, has been found guilty of incompetence and misconduct by a parliamentary ad hoc committee.

    1. Mkhwebane was suspended from her role in 2021 and an independent panel led by retired Constitutional Court judge Bess Nkabinde was tasked with investigating her fitness to hold office.
    2. The ad hoc committee largely endorsed the findings of the independent panel, which found prima facie evidence of incompetence and misconduct on Mkhwebane’s part.
    3. The committee voted on the charges faced by Mkhwebane on Sunday.
    4. Mkhwebane has faced numerous legal challenges during her tenure as Public Protector.
    5. Eight candidates, including Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka, have been shortlisted to replace Mkhwebane.
