The Shoprite Group has opened a new Checkers FX, UNIQ Clothing by Checkers and Petshop Science at Eastway Midstream Estate in Centurion, collectively creating 72 new employment opportunities in the area.

In the coming weeks, this store will also become the first Checkers in Gauteng to introduce the retailer’s smart Xpress Trolleys, following successful trials at two stores in the Western Cape.

Customers at the new Checkers Midstream supermarket can look forward to a wide range of fresh food, groceries, general merchandise and speciality offerings, including a Meat Market, Hot & Cold Foods Deli, Bakery and Fresh Fruit and Vegetables department. Sushi and Smoothie Bar as well as Krispy Kreme doughnuts are also available, along with a Money Market counter for financial services.

The Xpress Trolley will enable customers to select and scan products as they shop, keep track of their spend and pay directly on the trolley, avoiding the traditional checkout queue. It also provides product information, personalised promotions and in-store navigation on the cart.

Bongani Chabalala manages the new Checkers store. He joined the Group as a Perishables General Assistant in 2013 and has since progressed through various roles including as a Stock Counting Clerk and Trainee Manager before becoming Branch Manager in November 2024.

The new UNIQ Clothing by Checkers caters to the whole family with a clothing range that combines great fabrics, quality and an elevated sense of style at an accessible price. Shoppers can expect a seamless experience, with friendly service, a modern store environment and quick self-service checkout designed for convenience. The store adds to UNIQ’s growing national footprint, which recently reached 50 stores.

Petshop Science is a specialist pet retailer offering a comprehensive range of pet food, treats, toys and vet-approved local and international brands.

Checkers FX Midstream is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
