State-owned Airports Company South Africa has rolled out a groundbreaking real-time baggage-tracking tool within its mobile application, allowing passengers to follow their checked luggage from drop-off at the counter right through to secure loading on the aircraft. This innovation, launched on 18 November 2025, empowers users to input their booking reference and flight date for immediate status updates, transforming what was once a source of travel anxiety into a transparent process.
The feature marks a pivotal advancement in ACSA’s digital ecosystem, which serves over 25 million passengers annually across nine airports, including bustling hubs like O.R. Tambo and Cape Town International. By providing granular visibility into each handling stage—such as sorting, security screening and conveyor transit—travellers gain unprecedented reassurance, particularly amid rising concerns over mishandled bags in a sector where global mishandling rates hover around 7.6 per 1,000 passengers.
As reported by ITWeb, the upgrade is now accessible via downloads from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery, aligning with ACSA’s broader push to integrate smart technologies that enhance operational trust and efficiency. Interim chief information officer Sello Makhubela described it as a cornerstone of the company’s digital evolution, emphasising how such tools not only streamline convenience but also fortify confidence in behind-the-scenes procedures.
This rollout arrives at an opportune time for South African aviation, which has rebounded strongly post-pandemic with a 12 per cent year-on-year passenger surge in the first half of 2025. Yet challenges persist: baggage theft and delays have plagued routes, prompting many flyers to resort to personal trackers like Apple AirTags. According to MyBroadband, the app’s native functionality could reduce such reliance, while supporting ACSA’s sustainability goals by optimising logistics to cut energy waste in handling systems.
Beyond immediate user benefits, the tracker feeds into ACSA’s data analytics for proactive improvements, such as pinpointing bottlenecks to refine workflows. With aviation projected to contribute R200 billion to South Africa’s GDP by 2030, innovations like this underscore the sector’s commitment to world-class standards, fostering smoother experiences that encourage tourism and business travel in a recovering economy. As the festive rush looms, this timely addition promises to ease the perennial worry of “where’s my bag?” for millions of jet-setters.
