As South Africa’s automotive landscape continues to embrace new-energy mobility, Toyota is taking another significant step in its electrification journey with the introduction of the bZ4X and the bZ4X Touring. Together, they represent Toyota’s most advanced battery-electric offering yet, broadening customer choice while reaffirming the company’s commitment to practical, innovative and sustainable mobility.
As Toyota’s first dedicated battery-electric vehicle (BEV), the bZ4X represents much more than the launch of a new model. It is a tangible expression of Toyota’s Beyond Zero philosophy and forms an integral part of the company’s multi-pathway approach to reducing carbon emissions.
Rather than prescribing a single solution, Toyota continues to develop a diverse portfolio of electrified technologies – including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and future carbon-neutral fuels – allowing customers to choose the technology that best suits their individual needs and driving environments.
This philosophy has shaped Toyota South Africa’s own electrification journey. From introducing the Prius in 2005 and pioneering locally produced hybrid technology with the Corolla Cross Hybrid, to the arrival of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and now Toyota’s first dedicated battery-electric SUV, the company has steadily expanded its new-energy portfolio while building local expertise in future mobility.
Drawing on more than 25 years of electrification leadership and millions of electrified vehicles sold globally, the bZ4X combines Toyota’s renowned quality, durability and reliability with the latest advances in battery-electric engineering. Offered in tandem with the more adventurous bZ4X Touring, Toyota offers two distinct personalities built on the same advanced electric architecture – one refined and urban, the other purpose-built for customers whose journeys regularly extend beyond the city.
One Platform, Two Distinct Personalities
Although both vehicles share Toyota’s dedicated battery-electric e-TNGA platform, they have been developed to appeal to different lifestyles. The bZ4X remains a sophisticated, technology-focused SUV that balances refinement, comfort and everyday practicality with genuine all-wheel-drive capability. It is ideally suited to professionals and families looking for a premium electric SUV capable of seamlessly transitioning between weekday commuting and weekend escapes.

On the other hand, the bZ4X Touring builds on these strengths while introducing a more adventurous personality. Developed for active families and outdoor enthusiasts, the Touring offers greater luggage capacity, a more rugged design, increased versatility and substantially higher performance, making it Toyota’s flagship battery-electric SUV.
While both models share the same 2,850 mm wheelbase, the Touring stretches 140 mm longer and stands 70 mm taller than the standard bZ4X. The longer rear overhang significantly increases luggage capacity, creating a more practical companion for camping weekends, outdoor adventures and extended family holidays. Ground clearance also increases to 216 mm (200 mm in the bZ4X), reinforcing the Touring’s capability credentials.
Visually, the standard bZ4X embraces sleek sophistication through clean surfaces, flowing character lines and Toyota’s signature Hammerhead front-end design, creating a contemporary SUV with impressive aerodynamic efficiency. Slim LED headlamps, integrated front styling and a full-width rear light bar contribute to a premium, futuristic appearance that is unmistakably Toyota.
The Touring adopts a bolder interpretation of this design language. A more assertive front bumper, stronger lower body treatment, raised roof rails, thicker rear light bar and a broader visual stance create a vehicle that looks equally at home outside a mountain lodge as it does outside a corporate office. The design communicates strength and practicality without sacrificing the clean aesthetic expected of a modern electric vehicle.
Both models ride on striking 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels featuring resin detailing that creates a distinctive three-dimensional effect while complementing the vehicles’ premium appearance.
Whether navigating busy city streets, travelling hundreds of kilometres between provinces or venturing onto gravel roads in pursuit of the country’s spectacular landscapes, motorists expect confidence, comfort and dependability in equal measure.

At the heart of both models is Toyota’s latest-generation lithium-ion battery technology. The bZ4X features a high-capacity 73.11 kWh battery, while the flagship Touring employs an even larger 74.69 kWh battery to support its increased performance and capability. Both utilise a 104-cell lithium-ion battery architecture with advanced water-cooling and high-resistance coolant technology that helps optimise thermal management, maximise battery durability and improve overall efficiency.
Toyota engineers have further refined the battery’s thermal management system through battery pre-conditioning, allowing the battery to reach its optimum operating temperature before charging. This improves charging performance under colder conditions while contributing to greater long-term battery health.
Supporting the battery is Toyota’s newly integrated Electricity Supply Unit (ESU), which intelligently manages charging and electrical power distribution throughout the vehicle. Compact front and rear e-Axles integrate the motor, inverter and transaxle into highly efficient units, reducing weight while enhancing packaging efficiency and overall driving performance.
The battery system supports up to 22 kW AC charging and provides an estimated driving range of between 456 and 481 km (462 to 487 km for the Touring), making long-distance travel increasingly practical for South African motorists.
Every vehicle is supplied with charging cables suitable for home charging as well as public AC charging stations, while compatibility with DC fast chargers allows charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes under ideal conditions.
More Power, More Confidence, More Enjoyment
The bZ4X delivers an impressive 255 kW of power, while its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system produces 268.6 Nm of torque from the front motor and 169.8 Nm from the rear, propelling it from 0–100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. Instant electric torque delivery provides smooth, responsive acceleration in every driving situation while maintaining the refinement expected of a premium Toyota SUV.
The bZ4X Touring takes performance to the next level with a commanding 334 kW output, while its front and rear electric motors each generate 268.6 Nm of torque for effortless all-wheel-drive performance. The Touring accelerates from 0–100 km/h in only 4.3 seconds, making it one of the quickest SUVs Toyota has ever offered. Yet despite this remarkable performance, efficiency remains central to its engineering, with carefully optimised energy consumption and a top speed of 180 km/h.
The result is a driving experience that combines exhilarating performance with effortless refinement – characteristics that have become hallmarks of Toyota’s latest generation of electrified vehicles.
Confidence Beyond the Tar
Both models are underpinned by Toyota’s dedicated e-TNGA battery-electric platform, integrating the battery pack directly into the vehicle’s structure. This delivers exceptional torsional rigidity, lowers the centre of gravity and creates a balanced chassis that inspires confidence whether navigating winding mountain passes, urban streets or gravel roads.

The platform also incorporates lightweight, high-tensile steel construction together with reinforced battery, suspension and body structures. An omni-directional crash architecture has been engineered to protect occupants, the battery pack and other road users without compromising electric vehicle performance.
Suspension comprises MacPherson struts at the front and a sophisticated double-wishbone arrangement at the rear, delivering excellent ride comfort together with precise steering response and reassuring stability.
Engineered to Explore
For customers who regularly venture beyond the city’s edge, the bZ4X and bZ4X Touring deliver capability that sets them apart in the battery-electric SUV segment.
Toyota’s intelligent X-Mode system continuously manages power delivery and braking to maximise traction in low-grip conditions, offering dedicated settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. Grip Control maintains steady progress over uneven terrain at low speeds, while Downhill Assist Control automatically regulates braking on steep descents, allowing drivers to focus entirely on steering.

Combined with generous ground clearance, intelligent all-wheel drive and the instant torque delivery characteristic of electric motors, the bZ4X range is engineered to tackle gravel roads, mountain passes and challenging conditions with the confidence customers have come to expect from Toyota. Rather than redefining what an electric SUV can be, the bZ4X simply broadens where it can comfortably go.
Developed as an “Activity Hub”, the cabin has been conceived as a welcoming space that encourages connection, comfort and shared experiences. Clean horizontal lines, an open architecture and carefully selected premium materials create a sense of calm that immediately distinguishes the interior from conventional SUVs. Every design element has been considered to maximise visibility, spaciousness and ease of use, while the dedicated battery-electric platform allows the cabin to offer exceptional room for passengers without increasing the vehicle’s footprint.
The redesigned dashboard is centred around a new 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, complemented by a 7-inch digital combination meter positioned high within the driver’s natural line of sight. A compact shift-by-wire selector, wireless smartphone charging and a digital interior rear-view mirror reinforce the modern, technology-led environment while reducing clutter throughout the cabin.

Heated front seats and steering wheel, a panoramic glass roof, generous storage solutions and a spacious luggage compartment make the bZ4X equally suited to the daily commute and extended family holidays. The Touring further builds on this practicality with its increased cargo capacity, making it an ideal companion for customers whose adventures demand even greater versatility.
Technology That Works Naturally
Technology within the bZ4X has been designed to make every journey more intuitive and enjoyable. Wireless Apple CarPlay comes standard, allowing drivers to effortlessly access navigation, music, messages and favourite apps directly through the 14-inch multimedia display, while Android Auto compatibility is also available for added convenience.
Natural voice recognition, activated by the “Hey Toyota” command, enables occupants to control selected vehicle functions without taking their hands off the steering wheel, enhancing both convenience and safety.

With intelligent, user-focused technologies working quietly in the background, the bZ4X delivers a modern driving experience that keeps drivers informed, entertained and focused on the road ahead.
Safety Without Compromise
Every Toyota is designed around the principle that advanced safety should be available without compromise, and the bZ4X range represents one of the most technologically advanced safety packages ever offered by the brand.
The latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 integrates an extensive suite of active driver assistance technologies designed to help avoid collisions and reduce driver workload. These include the Pre-Collision System with pedestrian, cyclist and motorcycle detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist, Road Sign Assist, Parking Support Brake and Emergency Driving Stop System.
The system is complemented by Adaptive High Beam technology, which automatically adjusts the LED headlamps to maximise visibility without dazzling oncoming traffic, while Advanced Park can automatically steer the vehicle into suitable parking spaces with minimal driver input. Blind Spot Monitor with Safe Exit Assist further enhances occupant safety by warning passengers of approaching traffic before opening the doors.

Beneath the surface, Toyota’s dedicated battery-electric platform incorporates a reinforced safety structure specifically engineered to protect occupants, the high-voltage battery and surrounding road users in the event of a collision, reflecting Toyota’s unwavering commitment to world-class safety.
