TOYOTA GR COROLLA GETS 8-SPEED AUTOMATIC

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has expanded the GR Corolla range with the introduction of an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. Developed to enhance driveability, cooling performance and everyday usability, the new 8-speed Automatic (8AT) variant broadens the GR Corolla’s appeal while preserving the sharp dynamics of its GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged powertrain.

Since its local debut in 2023, the GR Corolla has played an important role in strengthening Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance portfolio. Launched as part of the GR Power tier, it became the brand’s second compact GR model after the GR Yaris, further reinforcing Toyota’s growing sports car credentials.

Powered by a compact yet highly potent 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine and originally offered exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, the GR Corolla quickly established itself as a formidable contender in the high-performance hot hatch segment.

    Enhanced Performance and Cooling

The expanded GR Corolla range now includes a dedicated 8AT model engineered to thrive under sustained high-load driving conditions. To support this, the automatic variant is equipped with an air-cooled automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler, supplemented by an additional sub-radiator positioned behind the front vents. A newly integrated cool-air duct, above the brake duct, further improves airflow management and thermal efficiency.

Aerodynamic efficiency has also been refined through the removal of the front fog lamps, reducing drag and turbulence at the nose. Privacy glass for the rear and back windows enhances passenger comfort while contributing to a cleaner, more purposeful exterior aesthetic.

Across the range, the GR Corolla now features Torsen limited-slip differentials, optimising traction and cornering performance. Rebound springs have been added to both front and rear shock absorbers to reduce inner wheel lift during aggressive driving, while revised rear suspension geometry improves anti-squat behaviour under acceleration.

Additional mechanical enhancements include a higher-capacity cooling fan coupling, upgraded from 330W to 500W, as well as the introduction of a tyre inflation pressure warning system (TPMS).

    Advanced Transmission Technology

The GR Corolla automatic is equipped with Toyota’s newly developed GR Direct Automatic Transmission (GR D-AT). Engineered with track driving in mind, the system delivers rapid, precise gear changes while anticipating driver inputs, allowing greater focus on steering and throttle control.

The GR D-AT includes paddle shifters, sequential shift functionality, a shift-lock system, A/T oil temperature warning and an advanced Parking Support Brake system (PKSB) capable of detecting both vehicles and objects. An onboard diagnostic (OBD) system ensures emissions compliance and simplifies vehicle monitoring.

    Driver-Focused Interior Refinements

Inside the cabin, chrome finishes have been replaced with GR gun metallic accents across the instrument panel, centre console and seat detailing -reinforcing the GR Corolla’s motorsport-inspired character. The front gear knob also adopts a matching GR gun metallic finish. Driver ergonomics have been enhanced with the relocation of the iMT switch to the front of the shifter, grouping key driving controls within easy reach.

All models now come standard with an upgraded, integrated audio system, active noise control, a reverse camera and blind-spot monitoring (BSM) with Safe Exit Assist (SEA). An advanced smart door-lock system with integrated buzzer and panic function further enhances vehicle security.

    Pure GR Performance

At its core, the GR Corolla features Toyota’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system, delivering seamless torque distribution between the front and rear axles for maximum traction and control. The turbocharged 1.6-litre engine produces 210kW and 400Nm of torque, enabling a top speed of 230km/h.

Customers can choose between a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, both engineered to deliver a deeply engaging and rewarding driving experience. Three selectable driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – work in harmony with GR-tuned suspension and a mechanical handbrake to ensure the GR Corolla remains equally capable on road and track. A distinctive triple-exit exhaust completes the performance package with an unmistakably aggressive soundtrack.

    Technology and Safety

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition is equipped with a Head-Up Display and Blind Spot Monitor, keeping critical information within the driver’s line of sight. A seven-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensures seamless connectivity, while Adaptive High-Speed Cruise Control and a reverse camera enhance comfort and confidence.

All GR Corolla models feature Toyota Safety Sense, including Hill Assist Control (HAC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD). Front and rear limited-slip differentials on the Circuit Edition provide added control during spirited driving.

With the introduction of the eight-speed automatic transmission and a suite of performance-focused upgrades, the GR Corolla continues to evolve as an important model in the Toyota’s Gazoo Racing lineup – combining precision engineering, everyday usability and uncompromising driving excitement in a true performance hatch.

The Toyota GR Corolla is available in four striking exterior colours: Midnight Red, Glacier White, Raven Black, and Fierce Red.

    Pricing and Service Plan

    GR Corolla MT: R985 200

    GR Corolla AT: R1 010 700

All Toyota GR Corolla models come standard with a 9-services/90 000km service plan and a 3-year/100 000km warranty. In addition, customers can purchase service, maintenance or warranty extensions via the comprehensive Toyota dealer network (220 outlets).
