For 25 years, the Nissan X-Trail has been one of Nissan’s most successful global SUVs selling almost 50 000 units in South Africa since its launch in 2001, gaining a well-deserved reputation as a trusted companion on every kind of journey.

Ask local X-Trail owners what sets their vehicle apart, and you’ll hear the same qualities time and again: versatility, comfort, and a thoughtfully designed 7-seater interior that truly delivers on space. Add industry-leading safety standards and versatile off-road capabilities, and it is clear why owners confidently take the X-Trail everywhere, from weekend family trips to serious outdoor adventures, across any road condition.

Nissan Africa Head of Communication, Brand and Customer experience, Ramy Mohareb said it was a remarkable achievement for the model that deserved to be properly celebrated.

“This is a special vehicle that has been a favourite family and adventure car in South Africa. It is really a vehicle that defies ordinary,” says Mohareb.

During Nissan’s ambitious Daring Africa expedition – an 8,000km journey across eight countries from Rosslyn to Cairo – the X-Trail proved its mettle as the official support vehicle for the expedition’s medical team. Tasked with navigating some of Africa’s most challenging terrain alongside a fleet of Nissan Navara pickups, the X-Trail completed every kilometer of the grueling journey flawlessly, earning the respect and trust of the entire expedition team.

The name reflects its purpose: “X” for extreme activities and “Trail” for capability on rough terrain. At launch, Nissan positioned X-Trail as “a true SUV, combining sportiness with exceptional versatility.” The original press material highlighted how it offered an alternative to traditional off-road 4x4s, with lower fuel consumption, better manoeuvrability, and a more accessible price point.

“With its simple, practical, and robust design, it strongly appealed to young families who enjoyed outdoor activities and to customers with active lifestyles” recalls Shinchiro Irie, Program Design Director.

Since spring 2001, the X-Trail formula has remained consistent: functional design, everyday usability, and capability on any road.

“The X-Trail must be a functional crossover that adapts to every stage of life. Its design never sacrifices functionality, and functionality never compromises design,” explains Satoru Tanaka, Chief Product Specialist.

Over four generations, the model has built a strong global footprint, achieving success across Africa, Oceania, Asia, and South America. From the third generation onwards, it entered the US market under the name Rogue, where it became — and remains — Nissan’s best-selling vehicle.

Today, the X-Trail continues this legacy with Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid technology and the e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system, delivering smooth, efficient, and confident performance in all conditions.

The X-Trail is now sold in G5 countries. To date, Nissan has sold over 8 million units worldwide.

Last year in South Africa, the X-TRAIL underwent a model year change, adding a walk-away lock and approach unlocking functionality and a wireless charger in all grades to make it more comfortable and convenient to South African customers.
