Volvo Cars has unveiled the EX60, an all-electric mid-size SUV that marks the company’s entry into the largest global electric vehicle segment, as competition intensifies around range, charging speed, performance and pricing. The model is positioned as a pivotal product in Volvo’s transition to fully electric mobility and is expected to materially expand the group’s addressable market.
The five-seat EX60 is designed to appeal to family buyers and mainstream consumers who have been hesitant to switch to electric vehicles due to concerns around range, charging convenience and cost. Volvo has positioned the model as a response to those barriers, pairing long-distance capability with faster charging and a broader set of powertrain options.

At the top end of the range, the EX60 offers a claimed driving distance of up to 810 kilometres on a single charge in all-wheel-drive configuration, based on preliminary WLTP testing. This places the vehicle ahead of Volvo’s existing electric models and positions it competitively against newly launched rivals in the same segment. Faster charging is another central feature, with the EX60 capable of adding up to 340 kilometres of range in around ten minutes when connected to a 400kW fast charger, according to the company.
The EX60 is offered in three main electric powertrain configurations. These include a flagship all-wheel-drive variant with the longest range, a second all-wheel-drive option with a lower range, and a rear-wheel-drive version aimed at customers prioritising efficiency and price. In total, Volvo plans to offer seven variants to cater for different driving needs and lifestyles.
Volvo has paired the vehicle launch with additional ownership incentives in selected markets. In Sweden, private customers will receive a 10-year battery warranty and three years of free home charging, with similar offers expected to be introduced elsewhere over time, subject to local conditions.
Underpinning the EX60 is Volvo’s new SPA3 electric vehicle architecture, alongside its HuginCore computing system. The platform introduces megacasting, cell-to-body battery integration and a new battery cell design, all intended to improve energy efficiency, reduce weight and lower manufacturing costs. Volvo says these advances also contribute to the EX60 having the lowest carbon footprint of any fully electric Volvo model to date, on par with the smaller EX30.
Design-wise, the EX60 continues Volvo’s Scandinavian styling approach, adapted for an all-electric format. Aerodynamic efficiency has been prioritised through a low front profile, sloping roofline and tapered body sides, resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.26. Inside, the long wheelbase and flat floor are used to maximise rear passenger space, luggage capacity and storage flexibility.
Technology is a central pillar of the EX60’s positioning. The vehicle is Volvo’s first to launch with Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant, integrated into the infotainment system to enable more natural voice interaction without fixed command structures. The system forms part of Volvo’s broader collaboration with technology partners including Google, NVIDIA and Qualcomm, and builds on the company’s role as a reference platform for Android Automotive OS.

The infotainment experience has been redesigned to improve responsiveness, with faster screen interaction, quicker navigation loading and more accurate voice recognition. Audio features include a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, with headrest speakers in all four main seats, and Apple Music pre-installed with Dolby Atmos support.
Safety remains a defining element of the EX60. The vehicle incorporates Volvo’s latest safety architecture, including a strengthened safety cage using boron steel and a new multi-adaptive safety belt designed to tailor protection to occupants. A wide array of sensors continuously monitors the vehicle’s surroundings, allowing the system to assess and respond to potential hazards in real time.
The EX60 is also designed to improve over its lifecycle through regular over-the-air software updates, enabling new features and refinements to be added after purchase. Production is scheduled to begin this spring at Volvo’s manufacturing facility in Sweden, with the model expected to reach the South African market in the third quarter of 2026.
