Stellantis has introduced a groundbreaking turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the Hurricane banner, poised to redefine performance in the midsize SUV segment. Dubbed the Hurricane 4 Turbo, this 2.0-litre unit marks one of the earliest instances of passive turbulent jet ignition technology in high-volume production, promising enhanced combustion efficiency. It delivers 324 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, making its debut in the mid-life refreshed 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which the brand unveiled on 28 October 2025. According to Car and Driver, the engine’s design emphasises power density, outpacing the outgoing 2.0-litre turbo by 20 per cent while trimming fuel consumption by 10 per cent, a feat attributed to its innovative ignition approach.

The turbulent jet ignition system employs a compact pre-chamber above each cylinder, where initial combustion generates a rapid flame front that propagates into the main chamber for a more thorough burn. This setup, inspired by racing applications, minimises unburnt fuel and emissions, aligning with tightening global standards like Euro 7. Motor1 reports that the engine incorporates an aluminium block, oil pan, and timing cover for reduced weight, alongside dual port and direct injection, twin spark plugs per cylinder, and a variable-geometry turbo capable of 35 psi boost. Operating on standard 87-octane fuel with a 12:1 compression ratio, it achieves 90 per cent of peak torque from 2,600 to 5,600 rpm, with full output sustained between 3,000 and 4,500 rpm—ideal for seamless overtaking and loaded hauls.

This powertrain pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive, enabling a class-leading 6,200-pound towing capacity and an estimated 506-mile range on a full tank. Production will occur at Stellantis’ Dundee Engine Plant in Michigan, supporting the company’s $3 billion investment in US manufacturing that includes additional shifts for rising demand. As detailed in Road & Track, the Hurricane 4 Turbo supplants the prior GME 2.0-litre in non-hybrid applications, yet the venerable 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 endures as the base option, delivering 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet for traditionalists.

The 2026 Grand Cherokee arrives with subtle yet impactful styling cues, including a bolder seven-slot grille, slimmed LED headlights in a signature hockey-stick motif, and revised lower fascias for improved aerodynamics. Inside, a commanding 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen takes centre stage, with an optional 10.3-inch passenger display for enhanced connectivity. Trim rationalisation streamlines choices to Laredo, Limited, and Summit, plus packages like Altitude and Reserve; the Hurricane engine slots into the Laredo Altitude and higher, while the base Laredo sticks with the V6. Driving.ca notes that the cabin refinements extend to relocated controls for climate and audio, plus premium touches in Summit variants such as Palermo leather and a 19-speaker McIntosh system.

Jeep maintains continuity with the extended-wheelbase Grand Cherokee L for seven-passenger duties and the 4xe plug-in hybrid, blending a separate 2.0-litre turbo (270 horsepower) with electric augmentation for 375 combined horses and 470 pound-feet, plus up to 26 miles of electric-only range. The Trailhawk off-roader returns exclusively with the hybrid, featuring Quadra-Drive II and air suspension for rugged prowess. Fresh palette options—Steel Blue, Copper Shino, and Fathom Blue—add vibrancy to the lineup. According to Freep.com, assembly at Detroit’s Jefferson North and Mack plants will ramp up later this year, underscoring the model’s role as Stellantis’ volume leader.

Pricing details emerge piecemeal, with the Hurricane-equipped Laredo Altitude pegged at around $46,135 including destination— a premium over the 2025 base at $38,735—reflecting added tech like Selec-Terrain 4×4 and traffic-sign recognition. Fuel economy figures remain pending, though the engine’s efficiency claims suggest parity or better than the V6’s 19/26 mpg city/highway. MotorTrend highlights how this refresh bridges Jeep’s petrol heritage with electrification mandates, positioning the Grand Cherokee against rivals like the Toyota 4Runner and Ford Edge in a market where SUV sales topped 50 per cent of US volumes last year.

Broader context frames the Hurricane 4 as a cornerstone of Stellantis’ Global Medium Engine family, drawing fuel-injection cues from Maserati’s Formula 1 efforts to boost refinement. Autoblog observes that while the V8’s demise signals downsizing’s inexorable march, the four-cylinder’s torque-rich profile preserves the Jeep ethos of effortless capability. With Jeep’s STLA Large platform slated for a 2028 overhaul, this iteration ensures relevance amid rising hybrid adoption and CAFE pressures.

In prospect, the 2026 Grand Cherokee stands as a versatile flagship, blending trail-ready fortitude with urban polish. Its turbocharged heart not only amplifies thrill but also efficiency, inviting drivers to embrace longer journeys without compromise. As sales commence in the coming months, it reaffirms Jeep’s command in a segment where adventure meets everyday elegance.
