South Africa’s automotive market is set to welcome another Chinese contender as premium brand Lepas confirms its 2026 launch. Operating under the Chery umbrella, Lepas aims to capture the growing demand for upscale vehicles among style-conscious drivers. The brand will debut with its flagship L8 SUV, unveiled at Chery’s 2025 Business Conference in China, followed by smaller L6 and L4 models. With plans to expand to five vehicles globally, Lepas targets annual sales exceeding 500,000 units, positioning itself as a key player in the competitive premium segment.
The L8 will offer petrol, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric variants, catering to diverse buyer preferences. The petrol model, likely the most popular in South Africa, features Chery’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, while the electric version boasts an impressive 700km range. Design chief Ivan Dulanovic drew inspiration from a running leopard, creating a sleek, dynamic aesthetic aimed at younger, tech-savvy consumers. The brand’s name, blending “leap” and “passion,” reflects its ambition to combine innovation with emotional appeal.
Lepas has appointed Letitia Herold, formerly of Honda South Africa, as National Brand and Marketing Manager to spearhead its local launch. Herold emphasizes that Lepas isn’t just selling cars but curating an experience for modern, confident drivers. “We’re speaking to a generation that wants more than just a car—they want an expression of their identity,” she explains. This strategy aligns with global trends where younger buyers prioritize cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and personalized design in their vehicle choices.
The arrival of Lepas signals Chery’s strategic push beyond budget-friendly models into the premium market, challenging established brands in South Africa. With its blend of advanced powertrains, bold styling, and a focus on experiential ownership, Lepas could reshape perceptions of Chinese automakers. As the 2026 launch approaches, industry watchers will keenly observe whether this new marque can leapfrog competitors and carve out a niche in one of Africa’s most dynamic car markets. The L8’s performance, pricing, and local reception will set the tone for Lepas’ ambitious global aspirations.
