Opel Brings the Heat with Tri-City Padel Challenge Debut in South Africa

Opel South Africa recently hosted its inaugural Grandlands Slam, a one-day Padel challenge, crowning champions in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg after an intense four-hour competition.

Padel, originating from Mexico, has surged in popularity in South Africa over the past three years, with numerous courts now spread across major cities. Since the beginning of the year, Opel has been sponsoring Padel courts in Randpark (Johannesburg), Gateway (Durban), and Durbanville (Cape Town), aligning perfectly with the Opel Grandland range and its customer base.

“Padel is a fantastic sport that has captured people’s imagination because of the innovation behind it, the ease with which people can access and enjoy it and the downright enjoyment of getting out, spending time with friends, competing and getting fit,” stated Jateen Daya, Opel SA Brand Head. “We like to think the Opel Grandland is equally innovative, enabling an active lifestyle, whether for fitness or social sake.”

The rise of Padel has revolutionized how people exercise and socialize, mirroring Opel’s evolution in the motoring industry. Established in 1862 to produce sewing machines, Opel transitioned to making Penny Farthing bicycles, cars, and now groundbreaking electric vehicles.

“There’s nothing typical about Padel, but then again there’s nothing typical about the Opel Grandland with its bold new design, iconic Vizor, vibrant interior with Pure Panel display, state-of-the-art responsive engine, and IntelliLuxLED® Pixel Lights. It’s a perfect synergy of agility and performance from the Padel court to the open road,” Daya added.

Stylish and sporty, the Opel Grandland comes in three models—Edition Base, GS Line, and Ultimate—all featuring high specifications and powered by a 121kW 1.6T engine with automatic transmission, making it an ideal Padel companion.

Close to 100 players participated in the event on 20 July, competing in doubles teams divided into four groups. Matches followed the Fast 6 format, with each group playing a minimum of four games. The top teams advanced through the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals.

The successful tournament provided a fun-filled day in true Opel style and introduced a new audience to Opel’s range, including the Corsa, Mokka, Zafira Life, and the star of the event, the Grandland.

“This was a massive success for everyone involved, from the players to the Opel staff on the day. South Africa can look forward to more Padel events like this,” Daya concluded.
