The weak rand and post-pandemic inflation have led to a significant rise in prices for dream cars, making them less attainable for many South Africans. For example, the BMW M3’s price has nearly doubled in nine years, now reaching around R2.1 million.

    1. The BMW M340i xDrive hits a sweet spot in terms of performance and affordability. The BMW 3 Series has always been rewarding to drive, thanks to its balanced rear-wheel drive chassis and near-perfect weight distribution. The M340i offers all-wheel drive with a rear-biased setup that allows for some oversteer, enhancing the driving experience.
    2. The M340i comes equipped with features such as an M Sport rear differential, fully variable locking function, and lowered M Sport suspension, enhancing cornering ability and traction. The variable-ratio sports steering system provides a connected feel to the road.
    3. The car is powered by a six-cylinder engine, producing 285kW and 500Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic auto gearbox. It achieves a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.3 seconds, offering impressive performance.
    4. The BMW 3 Series range received a facelift and upgraded interior electronics, including the introduction of BMW’s widescreen Curved Display and the latest-generation BMW iDrive powered by Operating System 8.
    5. The overall verdict is that the BMW M340i xDrive offers exciting performance, a balanced chassis, and the signature BMW straight-six soundtrack at a relatively more affordable price compared to its competitors, such as the Mercedes-AMG C43. The author expresses a fondness for the car and the driving experience it provides.
