The Obama Foundation has launched its call for applications to the prestigious 2026/2027 Leaders Africa Programme, a transformative six-month virtual initiative designed to empower emerging changemakers across the continent to drive inclusive, values-based progress in their communities and beyond. Now in its eighth year since launching in Africa, the programme has expanded globally but retains a dedicated focus on cultivating innovative leaders who champion belonging, participation and collective prosperity.

Open to individuals aged 24 to 45 who are professionally fluent in English and deeply committed to the African region, the initiative welcomes applicants from every country and territory on the continent. According to the foundation’s official guidelines, candidates must demonstrate at least three years of impactful work in public, private or civil society sectors, with a clear geographic focus on local, national or pan-African issues. Residency requirements are flexible, accommodating citizens, permanent residents or those who have lived in Africa for the past five years.

Selected participants will engage in a rigorous curriculum blending weekly live virtual sessions, monthly peer-learning community groups and personalised leadership coaching. As reported by Opportunities For Africans, the programme draws inspiration from Barack Obama’s own leadership philosophy, equipping participants with frameworks to navigate systemic challenges, build cross-sector alliances and amplify their influence through ethical, sustainable strategies.

The experience runs from September 2026 to May 2027, featuring expert-led discussions, skill-building workshops and intimate breakout sessions that foster lifelong connections among cohorts. Upon completion, graduates join the Obama Leadership Network—an active global community of over 1,500 alumni—who continue to collaborate on continental priorities ranging from climate resilience and youth employment to democratic governance and digital inclusion.

Successful applicants will refrain from running for political office during the programme period, ensuring focus remains on non-partisan, community-driven impact. The foundation emphasises that no legal or regulatory barriers must prevent participation in US-based virtual programming or potential in-person gatherings.

Previous African cohorts have produced trailblazers in fields as diverse as renewable energy entrepreneurship in Kenya, women’s land rights advocacy in Nigeria and tech-driven education reform in Ghana. Alumni credit the programme with sharpening their strategic vision, expanding professional networks and providing the moral courage to tackle entrenched inequalities.

With Africa’s youth population projected to reach 850 million by 2050, initiatives like this play a pivotal role in channelling demographic potential into purposeful leadership. The Obama Foundation’s investment in virtual delivery has democratised access, enabling participation regardless of location or financial means while maintaining the intensity of its original in-person model.

Applications must be submitted online by 12:00 Central Standard Time on 12 December 2025, with selection notifications expected in June 2026. Candidates are encouraged to prepare compelling narratives that showcase both personal values and measurable community impact.

This opportunity represents a rare chance to join a legacy of change-makers mentored under the Obama ethos, gaining not only world-class training but lifelong affiliation with a network that continues to shape Africa’s future long after the programme concludes.
