Clicks Group has revealed an unexpected rebranding of its long-standing M-Kem pharmacy chain, breathing fresh energy into the 61-year-old brand that has served South African communities since its inception in 1964. The overhaul introduces a sleek, modern aesthetic while preserving the trusted heritage that has made M-Kem a household name in neighbourhood healthcare and everyday essentials.

The revamp encompasses a complete visual identity refresh, including updated logos, in-store signage and packaging that blend contemporary design with nostalgic elements familiar to generations of loyal customers. According to the company’s announcement, the initiative aims to position M-Kem as a vibrant, community-focused pharmacy alternative within the broader Clicks ecosystem, distinct from the flagship Clicks retail format yet complementary in its commitment to accessible wellness.

Originally acquired by Clicks in the early 2000s as part of a strategic expansion into value-oriented pharmacy offerings, M-Kem has operated quietly with over 50 outlets concentrated in residential areas across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. As reported by Business Day, the rebrand responds to evolving consumer preferences for personalised, locally rooted healthcare experiences amid intensifying competition from discount chains and online platforms.

Clicks chief executive Bertina Engelbrecht described the transformation as a celebration of M-Kem’s enduring legacy while equipping it for future growth in a digital-first retail landscape. New store layouts will incorporate enhanced dispensary zones, expanded over-the-counter health consultations and seamless integration with the group’s loyalty programme, allowing customers to earn and redeem ClubCard points across both brands.

The rollout begins immediately, with pilot stores in Johannesburg and Durban showcasing the new look ahead of a nationwide implementation scheduled for completion by mid-2026. Digital enhancements include a dedicated M-Kem section on the Clicks app, featuring localised promotions and prescription refill reminders tailored to community needs.

Industry analysts view the move as a shrewd differentiation strategy, enabling Clicks to capture market share in price-sensitive segments without diluting its premium positioning. With South Africa’s pharmacy sector projected to exceed R70 billion in annual turnover by 2028, driven by an ageing population and rising chronic disease prevalence, the revitalised M-Kem could bolster the group’s defensive growth amid economic pressures.

Clicks has invested significantly in staff training to ensure the rebrand translates into superior customer service, emphasising the chain’s role as a convenient “corner pharmacy” for everyday health solutions. Early customer feedback from preview events has been overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the nod to tradition through retained elements like the classic green cross motif.

This surprise rebrand follows Clicks’ recent milestone of surpassing 1,000 stores nationwide and underscores the group’s confidence in brick-and-mortar relevance despite e-commerce gains. By modernising M-Kem while honouring its roots, Clicks reinforces its dominance in integrated health and beauty retailing, potentially setting a template for revitalising other legacy assets in its portfolio.

As reported by IOL, the initiative aligns with broader trends in South African retail where established brands refresh identities to appeal to younger demographics without alienating core patrons. With M-Kem now poised for renewed visibility, the rebrand could drive footfall increases of up to 15% in refreshed locations during the crucial festive trading period.
