    South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) Govenor Lesetja Kganyago.

    In addition to his primary role as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), Lesetja Kganyago holds several key leadership positions across academic, regional, and international institutions. 

    Academic Leadership

    • Chancellor of Stellenbosch University: He was inaugurated as the 16th Chancellor on 20 June 2025. In this ceremonial role, he serves as the university’s titular head and ambassador, presiding over official functions such as graduation ceremonies. 

    Domestic Committee Chairs (SARB)

    Within the central bank, he chairs the following essential committees: 

    • Monetary Policy Committee (MPC): Oversees interest rate decisions and inflation targeting.
    • Financial Stability Committee (FSC): Manages systemic risks to the national financial system.
    • Prudential Committee (Pruco): Focuses on the regulation and oversight of financial institutions.
    • Corporation for Public Deposits (CPD): Chairs the board of this SARB subsidiary. 

    Regional and International Roles

    • SADC Committee of Central Bank Governors (CCBG): Currently serves as the Chairperson, coordinating regional monetary policy and financial integration.
    • Financial Stability Board (FSB):
      • Co-chair of the Regional Consultative Group for Sub-Saharan Africa.
      • Co-chair of the Cross-border Payments Coordination Group.
    • Bank for International Settlements (BIS):
      • Chair of the Central Bank Governance Group (CBGG).
      • Former Chair of the Irving Fisher Committee on Central Bank Statistics.
    • IMF/World Bank: He formerly chaired the influential International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) from 2018 to 2021. 

    Professional Bodies

    • Association of African Central Bankers (AACB): Has served as the Chairperson.
    • Market Practitioners Group: Chairs this group which facilitates engagement between the SARB and financial market participants.
