BlackBerry has appointed John J. Giamatteo as its new Chief Executive Officer. Giamatteo, an industry veteran with over 30 years of experience, previously served as the President of BlackBerry’s Cybersecurity business unit.

    1. The company will separate its IoT (Internet of Things) and Cybersecurity businesses, establishing them as fully standalone divisions. This strategic move aims to unlock shareholder value and provide greater focus on each division’s respective markets.
    2. The decision to separate the businesses comes after a reassessment of Project Imperium, and BlackBerry will no longer pursue a subsidiary initial public offering (IPO) for its IoT business unit.
    3. Giamatteo’s appointment and the organizational restructuring signal a transformative period for BlackBerry. The company aims to drive enhanced shareholder value through operational excellence and innovation.
    4. BlackBerry will streamline its centralized corporate functions into business-unit specific teams, enabling each division to operate independently and profitably.
    5. The separation process will involve right-sizing the cost structures and optimizing the efficiency of the IoT and Cybersecurity businesses. The goal is to ensure they maintain profitability and positive cash flow going forward.
    6. To assist in the separation and right-sizing process, BlackBerry is in the final stages of selecting a consulting firm to provide expertise and additional resources for an independent assessment.
