President William Ruto has revoked the appointment of Mwambu Mabonga as the chairman of the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) after just seven months into the job.

    1. The revocation was announced in a Friday gazette notice, and Moses Chege has been appointed as the new chairman of IRA. Chege was previously serving as a member of the Kenya Wildlife Service board.
    2. Moses Chege’s three-year appointment as the chairman is effective from September 15.
    3. Mwambu Mabonga, the former IRA chairman, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Non-Governmental Organisations Co-ordination Board.
    4. During his short stint as IRA chairman, Mwambu Mabonga sent IRA commissioner general Godfrey Kiptum on leave and replaced him on an interim basis with Monica Thirima, a senior manager in charge of consumer protection.
    5. Mabonga’s decision to suspend Kiptum did not specify the reasons but mentioned the need for an investigative agency to look into legal matters and other concerns.
    6. However, Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo overruled Mabonga’s decision, stating that Kiptum would remain in office pending consultation on the board’s decision.
