Why Carlos Ghosn is suing Nissan for R18-billion

    June 21, 2023By Staff Writer
    Carlos Ghosn, former Nissan chairman

Carlos Ghosn has sued Nissan for $1 billion (R18.4 billion) in a lawsuit filed with Lebanon’s public prosecutor last month.

    1. The lawsuit accuses Nissan, two other companies and 12 individuals of crimes including defamation, slander, libel and fabricating evidence.
    2. Nissan declined to comment on the lawsuit.
    3. Ghosn was arrested in Japan in 2018 and charged with financial misconduct, which he denied.
    4. He escaped Japan in December 2019 by hiding in a box on a private jet and fleeing to Lebanon.
    5. In Japan, Ghosn had been awaiting trial on charges of underreporting earnings, breach of trust and misappropriation of funds, which he denied.
    6. After arriving in Lebanon, Ghosn said he was escaping a “rigged” justice system in Japan and wanted to clear his name.
    7. A court session on the lawsuit will take place on September 18.
