FNB, WesBank and RMB today announced the creation of a new business that gives more South African businesses and consumers access to the capabilities these brands have built and scaled over many years.

The offering, an integrated renewable energy platform designed to simplify how South African businesses access, finance and implement renewable energy solutions.

“We have spent years building capabilities that work at scale for our own clients. This allows more businesses and consumers to access those same capabilities, in a way that is simple to use,” says Muneer Ismail, CEO of Commercial and Corporate Banking. “We are focusing on energy because it is one of the most pressing issues facing South African businesses, and it is an area where we have deep experience.”

As businesses increasingly seek greater energy resilience, cost certainty and sustainability, renewable energy adoption can still be complex, requiring organisations to navigate a range of technical, financial and operational considerations.

Recognising that there is no single approach to renewable energy adoption, nav.energy brings together funding, expertise, delivery partners and flexible ownership models to support different business needs.

“As part of our commitment to climate resilience and sustainable economic growth, nav.energy reflects our determination to help clients meet their energy needs through on-site and alternative solutions,” adds Ismail. “Our role is to help businesses make informed energy decisions and access solutions that support long-term growth and investment.”

    Built on proven capabilities

Building on years of experience supporting clients, developing energy infrastructure and enabling the transition to cleaner and more resilient energy solutions.

The track record behind the platform is substantial. RMB has supported renewable energy projects in South Africa for 14 years and has provided more than R46 billion in lending to government-led programmes and private-sector initiatives. At 30 June 2025, 76% of RMB’s R53.5 billion infrastructure lending and investment related to renewable energy in South Africa.

WesBank, FNB Energy Solutions and Acacia, which supports renewable energy providers across the sector, provide the funding and expertise behind the scenes, while nav.energy simplifies access for customers.

Flexible solutions for different business needs

The right solution depends on available capital, ownership preferences and operational requirements.

    • Own it: Finance and own the system through WesBank, retaining the long-term benefits while taking responsibility for operation and maintenance.
    • Rent to own: Pay a fixed monthly amount, with ownership transferring at the end of the agreed term.
    • Pay for the energy you use: Under a managed arrangement or power purchase agreement, the system is owned and operated on the customer’s behalf, while the customer pays only for the energy consumed.

Now live for business, with more to come

This is now available to business, commercial and corporate customers seeking greater certainty over their energy supply and costs. Customers can learn more about the service, submit an enquiry and speak to specialists who can help identify the most suitable solution for their business.

The platform will continue to evolve, with future enhancements expected to include energy calculators, system-sizing tools and a supplier directory. Support for households will follow as the platform expands.

“Our ambition is to help South African businesses strengthen resilience, manage energy costs and pursue their sustainability goals with confidence,” says Ismail.
