The Betway Cares Foundation has partnered with the South African Heart Association (SA Heart®) to support the 2026 Check My Beat campaign, a community-focused initiative aimed at raising awareness of cardiovascular health and providing free health screenings to taxi drivers, vendors and commuters.
Taking place at Baragwanath Taxi Rank on 15 September 2026, the campaign brings essential health services directly into the heart of one of South Africa’s busiest transport hubs, helping to make preventative healthcare more accessible to people who may have limited opportunities to undergo regular medical checks.
Launched by SA Heart® around World Heart Day, Check My Beat focuses on communities that face an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease due to long working hours, stress, limited access to healthy food options and sedentary lifestyles. The initiative provides free screenings including blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and body mass index (BMI) assessments, alongside lifestyle and physical activity evaluations. Individuals identified as being at risk are encouraged to seek further medical care and support.
A distinctive feature of the campaign is its innovative use of music to drive engagement. Participants’ screening results are transformed into personalised AI-generated “Heart Health Tracks”, linking the rhythm of music to the rhythm of a healthy heart and encouraging greater awareness of cardiovascular wellbeing.
Jessica Frost Director HR at Betway Africa, said: “Good health is the foundation of strong communities. Through our support of Check My Beat, we are helping bring important health screenings and education directly to people where they live and work. By making heart health information more accessible, we hope to encourage early detection and help more South Africans take proactive steps towards healthier lives.”
The campaign brings together a range of organisations committed to improving community health outcomes, including healthcare professionals, academic partners and community stakeholders, all working towards the shared goal of reducing the impact of cardiovascular disease in South Africa.
Dr David Jankelow, Specialist Cardiologist and spokesperson for SA Heart®, said: “Cardiovascular disease remains one of the most significant health challenges facing South Africa, accounting for almost one in six deaths nationwide. Approximately 225 South Africans die from heart disease and stroke every day, yet at least 80% of premature cardiovascular disease deaths could be prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors and encouraging earlier detection. Through Check My Beat, we are bringing potentially life-saving screenings and education directly into communities, helping more South Africans understand their heart health and take proactive steps to reduce their risk.”
The Check My Beat campaign forms part of SA Heart’s broader efforts to improve cardiovascular health awareness and promote prevention through education, screening and early intervention. Supported by Betway Cares alongside other partners, the initiative aims to reach even more communities and expand its impact across South Africa.
