Anglo American Platinum unveils ambitious green initiatives

    June 28, 2023By Staff Writer
Natascha Viljoen, CEO of Anglo American Platinum
    1. One of South Africa’s biggest platinum group metal (PGM) producers, Anglo American Platinum, has announced plans to develop major renewable energy projects at its Mogalakwena mine in Limpopo province.
    2. The projects include a 100 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, a 360 kW hydrogen fuel cell system, and a 10 MW battery energy storage system.
    3. The solar PV plant will be one of the largest of its kind in the country and will be built on the mine’s tailings storage facilities.
    4. The hydrogen fuel cell system will provide clean and reliable power to the mine’s operations, while the battery energy storage system will help to balance the grid and improve energy security.
    5. The projects are expected to reduce the mine’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 100,000 tonnes per year, while also reducing its reliance on grid power and diesel generators.
    6. The project is part of Anglo American Platinum’s broader strategy to transition to a low-carbon future and reduce its environmental impact.
    7. The project is also expected to create jobs and boost economic development in the area, as well as contribute to South Africa’s broader efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy system.

Overall, the development of major renewable energy projects at Anglo American Platinum’s Mogalakwena mine is a significant step towards sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The projects will also contribute to economic development and job creation in the area, while helping to improve energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
