Namibia has temporarily suspended imports of live poultry, birds, and poultry products from South Africa.

    1. The ban is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
    2. South Africa is currently facing a major bird flu outbreak, resulting in significant poultry losses.
    3. Namibia relies on imports, primarily from South Africa, to meet its monthly chicken consumption of approximately 2,500 tons.
    4. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, as stated by Namibia’s agriculture ministry.
    5. Poultry producers in South Africa, including Quantum Foods and Astral Foods, have incurred substantial financial losses due to the outbreak.
    6. Namibia’s decision to ban poultry imports demonstrates its commitment to protecting its domestic poultry industry from the risk of bird flu.
