The chairperson of the Commission for Employment Equity has lamented the slow pace of transformation in the workplace for designated groups, especially for people with disabilities.
- Only 1.2% of the reported employees are persons with disabilities, out of 7.2 million employees.
- The chairperson said employers should go beyond the 1.2% and demonstrate a real commitment to employ persons with disabilities.
- Anyone can become disabled due to an accident or illness, and this should not mean the end of their employment opportunities.
- There are misunderstandings about sector targets, but they focus on the Economically Active Population which includes only those working, looking for work and employable.
- Groups with a higher proportion of the Economically Active Population should occupy more top management posts compared to groups with a smaller proportion.
- There was a presentation at the workshop on the new online EE system with the incorporated amendments and on CCMA case law related to employment equity.
