SA and Germany spark a hydrogen-powered partnership: fueling growth and innovation

    June 29, 2023By Staff Writer
    Minister Gwede Mantashe

A joint declaration of intent was signed between South Africa and Germany during the Bi-National Commission, focusing on the establishment of a South African-German Hydrogen Task Force.

    1. The declaration does not have any financial implications for South Africa and is not legally binding.
    2. The task force aims to drive the commercial viability of green hydrogen projects, industry, and infrastructure in both countries.
    3. It will facilitate the exchange of information, support the establishment of lighthouse projects, and promote trade of green hydrogen and power-to-X products.
    4. The task force will act as a platform for knowledge sharing, explore opportunities for exporting green hydrogen products from South Africa to Germany, and address key challenges in the value creation chain.
    5. The Ministry of Electricity sees green hydrogen as a crucial sector for South Africa’s economic growth and development, aligning with the country’s Investment Strategy and National Development Plan.
    6. The goal is to position South Africa as a preferred African investment destination and achieve a target of 30% Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. Green hydrogen is considered one of the key sectors in this strategy.
