Mondi, a leading packaging and paper manufacturer, has announced the transfer of ownership of the Ihluku timber farm in KwaZulu-Natal to Imsebe Enterprises. This milestone was achieved through Mondi Zimele, the company’s enterprise and supplier development initiative, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and other key stakeholders.

The handover, which took place on August 14 near Harding, marks a significant step for Imsebe Enterprises as its director, Thomas Mthethwa, becomes one of South Africa’s first black commercial timber farmers.

    Key Details

Mthethwa expressed his gratitude, stating, “This is a dream come true. It is an honour to be entrusted with this responsibility and to pave the way for other black farmers in the sector.” Under Mthethwa’s leadership, along with business partner Matt Stegen, Imsebe Enterprises aims to leverage its expertise in forestry management, silviculture, and community development.

Mondi’s mission focuses on managing sustainable, environmentally responsible plantations that create jobs and supply quality fiber to the market. With structured support from Mondi Zimele and the IDC, Imsebe Enterprises is expected to become a leading black-owned timber grower and a model for transformation in the forestry sector.

    Impact and Vision

The transfer of the Ihluku plantation, which spans over 1,000 hectares and is strategically located near major timber markets, will generate both permanent and contract employment opportunities, thereby strengthening the local economy.

Mondi South Africa Forests Managing Director Themba Vilane highlighted that this handover represents “the convergence of Mondi’s decision to sell the farm with Imsebe’s determination to enter the commercial forestry sector.” He expressed hope that Imsebe’s success will inspire similar initiatives nationwide, promoting shared value and broad-based economic inclusion.

Mondi Zimele CEO Nelly Ndlovu emphasized that this partnership exemplifies how economic transformation and inclusive growth can yield powerful results when executed with vision and collaboration. The selection of Imsebe Enterprises followed a rigorous Project Transform Timber process, demonstrating Mondi’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in the industry.
