Vodacom has launched a groundbreaking virtual wheeling platform that enables companies with multiple sites across South Africa to access renewable energy. This innovative solution, developed in partnership with Eskom, aims to transform the local electricity supply landscape and significantly reduce carbon footprints.
Traditionally, wheeling agreements involved one power producer and a single consumer, such as a mining operation, which often excluded larger companies like Vodacom. The new platform changes this dynamic by allowing Vodacom to harness green energy from its contract with the Sola Group, a solar farm located in the Northern Cape.
The concept of wheeling does not involve the physical transmission of electricity in the conventional sense. Instead, it functions similarly to water management, where energy is credited and accounted for without direct transfer. Historically, these agreements have been limited to one independent power producer and one consumer, complicating access for businesses with extensive operations.
Vodacom’s subsidiary, Mezzanine, has been collaborating with Eskom since 2023 to create this virtual platform, which simplifies the process of reconciling energy usage across Vodacom’s 15,000 sites in 168 municipalities. After a successful testing phase, the platform is now fully operational and employs smart metering technology.
The structure of the transaction includes several key agreements: a virtual wheeling agreement with Eskom, a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Sola Group, and a platform agreement that ensures compliance with Eskom’s requirements. This comprehensive framework enables Vodacom to effectively manage its energy consumption and costs.
Under this arrangement, Vodacom pays the Sola Group for each unit of energy consumed and continues to pay its electricity supplier. In return, Vodacom receives a refund from Eskom for the energy generated by the Sola Group and consumed at its sites. A portion of this refund is then paid to Mezzanine for the platform’s services, which reconcile power generation and consumption.
Vodacom believes this innovation not only enhances its own operations but also sets a precedent for other companies seeking similar access to renewable energy. The CEO of Vodacom has highlighted the significance of this development for the future of the country’s energy landscape, stating that it reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and the promotion of renewable energy.
This initiative is expected to reduce costs for companies, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and support the stability of South Africa’s electricity grid, ultimately preventing load shedding. With these advancements, Vodacom aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035, continuing its investment in energy efficiency and innovative green solutions.
