Glencore and Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) have joined forces with the South African government in a R27bn water project to supply drinking water to major platinum and chrome operations, as well as several hundred thousand people.

    1. The companies aim to secure half of the funding for the project by the end of 2023, while the rest will be sourced by municipalities and the government.
    2. The project aims to address the growing water scarcity concerns in South Africa, which have been exacerbated by climate change and a lack of investment in water infrastructure.
    3. The project is expected to create jobs and boost economic growth in the country, while also promoting sustainable development.
    4. The involvement of Glencore and Amplats in the project demonstrates the mining sector’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
