Sasol’s largest colliery, Syferfontein, has been denied a renewal of its water use license by the Department of Water & Sanitation.

    1. The department stated that the technical reports submitted by Sasol did not meet the required standards for protecting water resources.
    2. Syferfontein Colliery was established in 1989 to supply coal to Sasol Synfuels and plays a vital role in the company’s operations.
    3. The colliery has the capacity to produce 10.9 million tonnes of coal annually, making it a significant asset for Sasol.
    4. The denial of the water license renewal adds further challenges to Sasol, which has been facing a series of difficulties in recent times.
    5. Sasol has been working to transition towards greener energy solutions and reduce its carbon footprint.
    6. This development may impact Sasol’s coal supply chain and overall operations, potentially leading to operational and financial implications for the company.
