The Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) in South Africa is making a positive socio-economic impact on the industry and the country’s economy, according to Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the Minister in the Presidency for Electricity.

    1. The REIPPPP has selected 134 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as preferred bidders, resulting in the procurement of 11,904MW of renewable energy capacity. Currently, 6,180MW of that capacity is already operational.
    2. The programme has attracted an investment of R334.5 billion for energy infrastructure, stimulating economic growth and development in the renewable energy sector.
    3. Significantly, approximately R85 billion has been invested in black-owned businesses through the REIPPPP, contributing to the deracialization of the South African economy and providing opportunities for historically disadvantaged participants.
    4. The REIPPPP has created over 72,153 job years, encompassing employment opportunities during the construction and operational phases of renewable energy projects.
    5. The programme has also facilitated the growth of local content and industrialization, with approximately R69 billion spent on local components and materials.
    6. In terms of environmental impact, REIPPPP projects have offset around 97 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and saved 114.7 million kiloliters of water, highlighting the multiple benefits of renewable energy in mitigating climate change and resource conservation.
