Amazon Web Services (AWS) has opened its third AWS Skills Center globally, with the first one outside the US, and it is located in Cape Town, South Africa.

    1. The AWS Skills Center is a dedicated in-person learning space designed for individuals interested in cloud computing and exploring career opportunities in the industry.
    2. The other two AWS Skills Centers are based in Seattle, Washington, and Arlington, Virginia in the US.
    3. The center in Cape Town aims to provide an opportunity for anyone in the local community, regardless of background or education level, to learn about cloud computing and its applications.
    4. AWS chose Cape Town due to the region’s talent pool and believes upskilling the workforce will drive innovation, economic growth, and digital transformation in South Africa.
    5. The AWS Skills Center offers a range of free cloud training, career exploration activities, and interactive experiences to engage visitors.
    6. In addition to training, the center provides career coaching and networking events with local employers and workforce development organizations to connect individuals with job placement opportunities.
    7. The center features eight immersive exhibits where visitors can explore real-world cloud applications, learn about enabling technologies, and receive guidance on structuring their learning path based on their interests and skill levels.
    8. The AWS Skills Center in Cape Town aims to complement the company’s R30 billion investment in the South African economy over the next six years. AWS plans to train 60,000 people within the next two years.
    9. The launch of the skills center in Cape Town holds significance for AWS as the city is where the first Elastic Compute Cloud instance (EC2) was developed in 2006, serving as the core of AWS’s business.
    10. The launch of the skills center coincides with Amazon.com’s preparations to launch e-commerce marketplace operations in South Africa, which is expected to happen later in the year.
